Hello FB friends!
I’d like to invite everyone to participate in a yearlong charity event with our office.

It’s so easy to do and I think it would be a wonderful way for us all to connect, give back and do something that is good for us individually as well.
CharityMiles is one of the latest companies trying to initiate social change in a viable way. Rather than force people to change their habits, the app gives users a way to add charity to those everyday activities...users don’t even have to open their wallet thanks to the corporate sponsors and donations.
*You need to have a facebook or twitter account in order to participate and of course an android or apple phone that can download the app from your play store.*
The goal is to turn daily exercise into a charitable activity, not to make fitness a drain on your wallet. All those donations will come from corporate sponsors willing to foot your bill. Brands and corporations get to associate with great charities, users give to charity and stay healthy without spending a dime, and CharityMiles — a for-profit company — gets to keep a small corporate commission.
In order to donate the money after a workout, users must agree to post their activity to Facebook or Twitter. It’s a way to raise awareness for a cause, but also a way to promote the app — and the paying sponsor — through the social web.
The app is a basic distance monitor that relies on your phone's GPS to track your mileage. You simply choose from the available activities at the top of your screen, then swipe to select from a wide variety of very worthy causes!
To set up the app is a basic step by step process that is very easy and user friendly!
Join our team #waukeefamilydentistry. You can do this by opening the menu from the upper left corner of your screen and tap join team and then enter #waukeefamilydentistry. Once you’ve done this you can then tap on the team name and see how many miles we’ve accumulated.
We’ve chosen the Wounded Warrior Project as our charity of choice for this calendar year. You can choose a different one and still be a part of our team. At the end of the year we will tally up our miles as a group and our office will make its own separate monetary donation to the Wounded Warrior Project. We will post totals on facebook once a month to track our progress. Prizes will be given to those with the most miles in each category of biking, walking, and running.

Thank you,
Waukee Family Dentistry

Blessing Tree Gift Delivery
Blessing:
n.noun
  1. The act of one that blesses.
  2. grace.
  3. Something promoting or contributing to happiness, well-being, or prosperity.

There are those who are lucky to receive blessings in time of need or crisis or as an act of friendship and care...but the really blessed ones are those who share the act of GIVING....of BLESSING others.

Dr. Lisa Kurtz and the staff at Waukee Family Dentistry adopted a family this Christmas through The Blessing Tree in Waukee.  The program, in part through the Waukee Police Department and the Christian Services at Westview Church, served 150 families this year and will be providing a Christmas for over 400 children!

On December 10th, 2014 Drs. Lisa and Tina Kurtz alongside their dental team shopped at Target, Scheels, Zumiez, & Build a Bear fulfilling Wish Lists provided to us through the Blessing Tree to bring Christmas to 3 deserving kids.

On December 15th, 2014 the packages were delivered to the program coordinator, Laura Blum, all wrapped and ready to be delivered!!  The gifts will go out to the families this Friday, December 19th, 2014, to be placed under trees for eager and grateful kids to open Christmas morning!

Through this act it is truly our team who feels the blessing! From all of us at Waukee Family Dentistry to your family we wish you and yours the VERY MERRIEST OF CHRISTMAS SEASON!

University of Iowa College of Dentistry's Inaugural Prophy Cup

On Sunday, September 7th, 2014 the IASDA (Iowa American Student Dental Association): the University of Iowa's College of Dentistry's student government & the dental students equivalent to their own ADA (American Dental Association) hosted an event...an event that provided SMILES all day, but also for the PURPOSE of smiles!

The Inaugural year of The Prophy Cup was co-planned by a 2nd year & 4th year duo of dental students along with help and support from classmates, administrators from the college of dentistry, and alums.  The event was held at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City, & was a HUGE SUCCESS!

The benefits from this event go to a fund: The 2011 Fund, & it is purposeful two fold.  It helps give patients with dental needs the ability to afford treatment, and therefore creates clinical hour requirements for the dental students.

We are VERY PROUD that our practices Dr. Tina Kurtz-Hulten contributed to the benefit for her alma mater as a Hole Sponsor & the event raised over $1,500.00 to go into the fund and towards helping patients with treatment needs as well as, dental students earning graduation!

The benefit event has been set up to to happen yearly in the Fall, for interest in contributing or sponsoring a hole please contact: peter-marsho@uiowa.edu or connie-bringham@uiowa.edu.  For more pictures from the event you may also visit: http://www.facebook.com/IowaASDA.com and click on albums.

Community education and contributions are two very important aspects within our practice. We are proud to take an active role in the community and with the sense of 'home' we have tied to Waukee being the neighborhoods and schools that both doctors grew up in building friendships, receiving educations, and later raising their own families in as well we are certainly pleased to be involved however we can help or give back.

In February, Dr. Tina spent time with Walnut Hills Elementary for Dental Health Month educating the third grade class on the importance of good oral hygiene, many different donations are made to the schools and other various community outlets, & in July we will be sponsoring a blood drive with the LifeServe Blood Center Bloodmobile at our office. Sometimes those fingers of philanthropy reach beyond our western suburb walls too....Dr. Lisa and Dr. Tina both volunteer their time providing free dental care to elementary children for a day with the Mobile Smile Squad Clinic in Des Moines & Dr Lisa recently made a generous donation to the American Diabetes Association: Tour de Cure.

Not only is it important to us as dental professionals to take an active role as leaders in our community but, we are THRILLED when we see our patients join us and rise up as well! Here are a few pictures and descriptions of active community members we were pleased to help make their efforts successful too!

Linda Abendroth, of Adel, supports the local Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines and provided them with our donation of toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Randy Collier, of Waukee, traveled on a mission trip to Africa taking our donation of toothbrushes and toothpaste with him, providing oral health supplies to rural villages.
Mike Everitt, of Urbandale, enthusiastically took our doantion of an electric toothbrush to the Waukee Dollars for Scholars Silent Auction.

What an amazing group of individuals we are proud to partner with and look forward to continued community contributions.
